Privacy Policy — Nova Recorder

Nova Recorder (bundle ID com.izzy.Nova-Recorder, with the Apple Watch app com.izzy.Nova-Recorder.watchkitapp) is developed and operated by an independent developer, Yisrael Fried ("I", "we"). This document explains what the app records and stores, why, where it lives, who can see it and how to delete all of it.

In short

  • Nova Recorder is a personal memory tool. It records your day from your Apple Watch or iPhone so you can come back later to what was said, where you were and the moments you marked. It is meant for personal use only, like a notebook that writes itself.
  • Your recordings stay with you. They are stored on the watch, on the iPhone and in your own private iCloud account. We have no server, no user accounts, and no way to hear or see your recordings.
  • No ads, no analytics, no tracking, no third parties. The app talks to nothing but Apple's own services in your account.
  • You control recording: it starts only when you tap, and stops when you tap again.
  • Deletion is real: delete a recording in the app, delete the app, or delete the data from iCloud in Apple's settings.

1. What the app records and stores

Audio. While recording is on, the watch's microphone (or the iPhone's, if you record from the phone) records continuously, including with the screen off and with the app in the background. The recording is cut into segments of up to 30 minutes so that one failure cannot cost more than one segment. Each segment is saved as an audio file (AAC) with its start time, length and size.

Location. If you allow it, the app saves a GPS point at the start of each segment, another point roughly every 15 minutes while you are moving, and one for every bookmark you mark. Location is used to show "where I was" on the map next to each segment. The app records without location permission too; there simply will be no points on the map.

Motion. The app uses the device's motion data only to decide whether you are moving and a new GPS point is worth taking. The motion data itself is not stored.

Bookmarks and tasks. When you tap "bookmark" or "task" on the watch, a timestamp (and a location, if available) is stored inside the segment. That is all a bookmark contains.

Technical data. Each segment also stores the battery level when it started and the name of the device that recorded it ("Apple Watch" or the iPhone). This helps explain why a recording stopped.

The app does not transcribe, does not recognise speech and does not identify voices. It does not send audio to any service.

2. Where it is stored

On the watch. Each segment stays on the watch until it has been transferred to the iPhone. The watch deletes its copy only after the iPhone confirms the segment is saved there, once a day.

On the iPhone. Recordings, bookmarks, location points and the timeline are stored in the app's private storage on the device. Other apps cannot reach them.

In your iCloud. The app can copy recordings and their metadata to the app's private store in your iCloud account (CloudKit, container iCloud.com.izzy.Nova-Recorder), so they are available on other devices signed into the same Apple ID. That store belongs to your account and is run by Apple. We have no access to it and cannot read from it. A backup to iCloud Drive (an archive file) happens only when you choose it on the Export screen.

Export. From the Export screen you can save or share audio files. Whatever you share leaves the app to the place you chose, and from there it is in your hands.

3. Who can see it

Only you. Recordings never pass through a server of ours, and we hold no account or key that could reach them. If you share a recording, the people you chose receive it.

4. Recording other people

Nova Recorder records whatever the microphone hears, including people around you. Making sure a recording is lawful and fair is your responsibility. In many places you may record a conversation you take part in; in others every participant must consent; and some places forbid recording altogether (courts, hospitals, some workplaces). Before you record, check the law where you are, and tell people you are recording when it is required or simply fair.

The app exists to help you remember your own day. It is not made for monitoring others, eavesdropping or collecting information about people without their knowledge, and it must not be used that way.

5. Permissions the app asks for

  • Microphone: to record. Without it there is no app.
  • Location (while using): to mark where you were. You can decline and recording still works.
  • Motion & Fitness: to know when to take a location point and save battery. You can decline.
  • Notifications: only to tell you that recording stopped because storage ran out.

6. How long it is kept and how to delete

Recordings are kept until you delete them. There is no automatic deletion on the iPhone, because these are your memories.

  • One recording or a whole day: delete from inside the app, on the timeline.
  • Everything on the device: deleting the app deletes all of its local data.
  • Everything in iCloud: in iPhone Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then Manage Account Storage, then Nova Recorder, and delete the data. Archives in iCloud Drive are deleted from the Files app.

7. Children

The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

8. Changes to this policy

If anything changes, this document will be updated at this address and the date at the top will change. A material change will also be mentioned in the version notes on the App Store.
